Elegua is the first protection, since it is he who opens the ways to continue in religion. The uninitiated or aleyos must receive or consecrate it as first. It is the sight that follows a path, becomes a fearsome and ferocious warrior when he joins Oggún and Oshosi, nothing stops him. Elegua is one of the first Oshas or Orishas to be received. It is an Osha from the group of Orisha Oddé, who are called The Warriors. He is the first of the warriors along with Oggún, Oshosi and Osun. In nature, it is symbolized by rocks. Eleguá came to the earthly plane accompanying Osha Obbatalá. He is considered the fundamental messenger of Olofin.

His number is 3, his colors are red and black. Monday and the 3rd of each month are his days. In syncretism it is compared with the Holy Child of Atocha (January 1st). Its celebration is on January 6 and June 13.
